Several underlying disorders or drugs can lead to disturbances at four major sites of regulation of lipoprotein metabolism. Acquired hyperlipidaemia tends to manifest either as hypertriglyceridaemia alone or as combined elevations of cholesterol and triglyceride levels (Fig. 6.10). It usually responds to treatment of the underlying condition, where possible, or to discontinuation of the responsible drug.
